Set Results-Oriented Targets for Marketing Success

April 21st, 2010 | Alex Mathers

Right, so you’re working hard actively marketing the work you have, your services, your brand, your products.

This could be in various ways, on and offline, including the ways in which I’ve talked about here and in my ebook, such as bringing targeted traffic to your blog, making connections through social media, engaging with prospects on forums, and introducing yourself via email to your prospects.

One of the best ways to get strong, consistent results with this kind of active self-promotion is to set yourself results-oriented targets instead of effort-oriented targets.

So, for example, instead of writing a post for your blog, tweeting it, then leaving it at that, make a real commitment to bringing a certain number of people to your post and blog within a week. This might mean using a few extra web tactics on top of using Twitter, but you know what you are aiming for.

Or, for example, instead of writing five email rapport-building introductions to potential clients, commit to writing as many emails or making as many calls as it takes until you receive a response from five people who ask for more information on your services.

You can apply these results-oriented methods to any active marketing technique you have in your arsenal.

These targets are short-term, but will help you stay focused on achieving your long-term goals, fast-tracking you to success.

Do people agree with these ideas?

I think results oriented targets is a great way to look at your marketing activity, especially if you are doing something like writing blog posts. That way you can structure your activity around the result you want, e.g. leading up to a specific call to action that will help you achieve it.

For example, I’m looking to build a subscriber base, so I’ll be creating long posts and splitting them over several days, with a reminder to get my RSS feed at the end of each post.

I absolutely agree, because I am too lazy to promote my stuff since I don’t earn money from that, but I get periods when I am all over Facebook, I have a small fan page for my illustratins there, and I set myself a goal to bring more people to see it. I get very few visitors daily, so over 30 is “more people” to me haha,

@Cashdoodle – you’re very right about the use of calls to action/reminders for your readers to take action in some way. Having results-oriented targets should remind us to use these methods.
